‘Golden Waves’
Feyza’s passion lies in combining traditional Turkish craftsmanship with
contemporary ideas and methods. Therefore, as a continuation of this goal, she
has been working with women in Turkey on a new material investigation. “Golden
Waves”, a tall fabric floor lamp, is created by using a traditional Turkish embroidery
technique called “Tel Sarma”, (Wire Wrapping) using gold wires. It is a craft that
originates back to the 17th century and today is mostly attributed to the Bartin
province of Turkey, and traditionally, the embroideries are used to embellish
bedding, tablecloths, clothing, and head scarves. It is a complicated technique,
requires good technique and intricate handiwork, and is taught in specialized
hand-craftsmanship institutes in Turkey or is a talent passed down generationally.
The Floor Lamp is composed of gold wires embroidered in a contemporary and
organic wave pattern, creating trails that cross and wrap around the fabric of the
lamp. The brass structure is illuminated along its length with LEDs, and the light
shining through the fabric creates a beautiful shimmer on the golden embroidery,
activating and enlivening the pattern
