PILLARS OF MEERSCHAUM
For her debut collection ‘Pillars of Meerschaum’ with Wex-ler Gallery for The Salon Art & Design Show, Feyza Kemahlioglu
designed one-of-a-kind lighting pieces. Inspired by the architectureand culture of Istanbul where she grew up, ‘Pillars of Meerschaum’ isa study into the juxtaposition of tradition and modernity. The leading material in her collection is Meerschaum,German for “sea-foam”, a soft white clay mineral, found mainly inEskisehir, a small city in central Turkey. By taking an antiquatedmaterial and giving it a contemporary aesthetic and function, FEYZbrings the old and the new together to create a timeless design.Turkish craftsman carved the Meerschaum with intricatepatterns and perforations to diffuse the light. The stone is combinedwith hand-blown glass and brass parts in New York. The blown glasscompliments the detailing on the Meerschaum by the addition ofdelicate textures made with cane and gold leaf.
