The ‘Lean’ light was designed to become a sculptural piece that would casually lean on the wall. The inspiration came from the Basilica Cistern in Istanbul, Turkey. Each column in the Cistern, cracked and stained from the water has unique engravings on them. The Lean Light, in its structure and the making of the glass tries to capture the essence of those columns. The glass globes of the Lean Light, are not perfect spheres and are made with the intention of being beautiful art pieces themselves. The difference in glass thickness causes a spectacular dispersion of light. Each globe has gold leaf (inspired by the ancient process of gilding and damascening, as well as the aging look of the Cistern columns) that is carefully added when the glass is still hot and malleable. When the globe is lit and glowing the gold leaf detail resembles constellations.
